@BP_America #GulfOilSpill 2 years later : Oil's well again?
Friday marked the two year anniversary of America's worst oil spill. British Petroleum was behind the disaster that took two months to maintain yet also spawned side-effects that caused a downward spiral in the economy, tourism and wildlife still to this day. In recent ads, images of green grass and beautiful water have been advertised in an attempt to lure people to the US Gulf coast. But is everything back to normal? Abby Martin takes a closer look at spill two years later.

General strike marks another step forward for indignados

'In effect, the only form of mass opposition available to people in Spain is in the streets. Through mobilization, dissociation and the emergence of new types of actors, distances are opening up between the formal constitution of the government and the material constitution of society to reveal new possibilities for the future.
As each day passes, breaking with the current regime and establishing an alternative are less the ideological desires of revolutionaries and more an issue of necessity for the average person in light of the dire circumstances they face daily. Those who wish to work will have to do it through cooperatives.
Those who wish to learn will have to organize their own alternative universities. Those who wish to inform themselves will have to look to the alternative media. And those who wish to have cultural goods will have to share them.
This is the politics of the common that we saw in action in our streets today, and which we will see in the alternative institutions of tomorrow.'

Global Social Justice: Naar een nieuwe solidariteit
uit MO* Paper: Het einde van de ontwikkelingssamenwerking?
Ontwikkeling en samenwerking zijn uitgeholde concepten geworden, er zijn andere machtsrelaties aan het ontstaan, er komt een vernieuwde Zuid-Zuidsamenwerking, maar tegelijk blijft het kapitaal van het Zuiden naar het Noorden stromen en blijft de ongelijkheid toenemen.
Redenen genoeg dus om na te denken over een alternatief voor het overgefragmenteerde systeem van de ‘hulp’, waarbij de rijke landen menen te weten wat de arme landen nodig hebben en progressieve bewegingen de illusie blijven koesteren dat we toch proberen de armoede te bestrijden.
Voor een toekomstige evolutie zie ik persoonlijk drie richtingen.
Ten eerste zal het Noorden zelf zijn ontwikkelingsmodel moeten her-denken. Vanuit ecologisch oogpunt weten we dat ons industriële ontwikkelingsmodel niet veralgemeenbaar is en dat we ons productie- en consumptiepatroon zullen moeten bijstellen. Dit moet gebeuren met oog voor het welzijn van mensen en zal dus ook gepaard moeten gaan met een betere herverdeling. Sociale en milieurechtvaardigheid moeten hand in hand gaan. Dat is een grote uitdaging voor Noord en Zuid. In die zin kan de huidige crisis inderdaad als een opportuniteit worden gezien, een kans om na te denken over welk soort ontwikkeling we willen, of en hoeveel groei we kunnen hebben, hoe onze sociale bescherming moet worden aangepast om rekening te houden met de veranderende samenleving en ook met de klimaatverandering. Dit is een belangrijke taak voor vakbonden en derdewereldbewegingen, die hiermee hun samenwerking kunnen versterken.
Ten tweede zullen we een daadwerkelijk solidariteitsmechanisme met de verarmde landen van het Zuiden moeten instellen. Hulp en solidariteit, zo stelt Yash Tandon, sluiten elkaar uit. Solidariteit kan er slechts komen op basis van openlijk en democratisch besproken gemeenschappelijke doelstellingen. Dat betekent dat arme landen in eerste instantie een mogelijkheid moeten krijgen om hun eigen ontwikkelingsmodel op te stellen en hun eigen middelen te gebruiken. De huidige steun voor de versterking van hun belastingsystemen gaat in die richting. Daarnaast kan ook een internationaal fiscaal systeem in de vorm van een financiële transactietaks bijdragen tot een wereldwijd fonds dat voor herverdeling zorgt. Dit kan utopisch klinken, maar in de huidige crisistijd waarin het overleven van de mensheid op het spel staat, zijn innovatieve oplossingen dringend nodig. Ook de universele mensenrechten waren ooit utopisch, laat staan een systeem van Verenigde Naties met gelijke soevereiniteit voor alle landen. En toch zijn die er gekomen.
Ten derde denk ik dat onze solidariteit zich vooral zal moeten uiten in de vorm van respect voor en een rechtvaardige verdeling van de natuurlijke hulpbronnen en in de verdediging en verdeling van de wereldwijde publieke goederen. Een universele sociale bescherming (op nationaal vlak), gendergelijkheid en milieubescherming zijn daar essentiële onderdelen van. Die solidariteit kan tot stand komen door te wijzen op ons algemeen belang. Mijn voorstel is, voortbouwend op het voorstel van François Houtart, om alle elementen die wij als werelwijde publieke goederen beschouwen, onder te brengen in een concept van het ‘gemeenschappelijk goed van de mensheid’. Ik denk aan water, bossen, visbestanden, voedselsoevereiniteit, een brede sociale bescherming, ...

Massive leak reveals criminality and paranoia among coporate titans #GlobalChange

WikiLeaks begins to publish today over five million e-mails obtained by Anonymous from "global intelligence" company Stratfor. The emails, which reveal everything from sinister spy tactics to an insider trading scheme with Goldman Sachs (see below), also include several discussions of the Yes Men and Bhopal activists. (Bhopal activists seek redress for the 1984 Dow Chemical/Union Carbide gas disaster in Bhopal, India, that led to thousands of deaths, injuries in more than half a million people, and lasting environmental damage.)
Many of the Bhopal-related emails, addressed from Stratfor to Dow and Union Carbide public relations directors, reveal concern that, in the lead-up to the 25th anniversary of the Bhopal disaster, the Bhopal issue might be expanded into an effective systemic critique of corporate rule, and speculate at length about why this hasn't yet happened—providing a fascinating window onto what at least some corporate types fear most from activists.
"[Bhopal activists] have made a slight nod toward expanded activity, but never followed through on it—the idea of 'other Bhopals' that were the fault of Dow or others," mused Joseph de Feo, who is listed in one online source as a "Briefer" for Stratfor.
"Maybe the Yes Men were the pinnacle. They made an argument in their way on their terms—that this is a corporate problem and a part of the a [sic] larger whole," wrote Kathleen Morson, Stratfor's Director of Policy Analysis.
"With less than a month to go [until the 25th anniversary], you'd think that the major players—especially Amnesty—would have branched out from Bhopal to make a broader set of issues. I don't see any evidence of it," wrote Bart Mongoven, Stratfor's Vice President, in November 2004. "If they can't manage to use the 25th anniversary to broaden the issue, they probably won't be able to."
Mongoven even speculates on coordination between various activist campaigns that had nothing to do with each other. "The Chevron campaign [in Ecuador] is remarkably similar [to the Dow campaign] in its unrealistic demand. Is it a follow up or an admission that the first thrust failed? Am I missing a node of activity or a major campaign that is to come? Has the Dow campaign been more successful than I think?" It's almost as if Mongoven assumes the two campaigns were directed from the same central activist headquarters.
Just as Wall Street has at times let slip their fear of the Occupy Wall Street movement, these leaks seem to show that corporate power is most afraid of whatever reveals "the larger whole" and "broader issues," i.e. whatever brings systemic criminal behavior to light. "Systemic critique could lead to policy changes that would challenge corporate power and profits in a really major way," noted Joseph Huff-Hannon, recently-promoted Director of Policy Analysis for the Yes Lab.
Among the millions of other leaked Stratfor emails are some that reveal dubious financial practices, including an apparent insider trading scheme with Goldman Sachs Managing Director Shea Morenz, who joined Stratfor's board of directors and invested "substantially" more than $4 million in the scheme, called StratCap. "What StratCap will do is use our Stratfor's intelligence and analysis to trade in a range of geopolitical instruments," wrote Stratfor CEO George Friedman in September 2011. StratCap was designed through a complex offshore share structure to appear legally independent, but Friedman assured Stratfor staff otherwise: "Do not think of StratCap as an outside organisation. It will be integral... It will be useful to you... We are already working on mock portfolios and trades." (StratCap has been due to launch in 2012, though that could now change.)
Other emails show Stratfor techniques of a truly creepy Spy vs. Spy sort: "[Y]ou have to take control of him. Control means financial, sexual or psychological control," wrote CEO Friedman recently to an employee, Reva Bhalla, on how to exploit an Israeli intelligence informant providing information on Chavez's cancer. (Stratfor's "confidential intelligence services" clients include, besides Dow and Union Carbide, the US Department of Homeland Security, the US Marines, the US Defense Intelligence Agency, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Raytheon.)
Perhaps most entertainingly of all, the email trove reveals that Stratfor's "Confederation Partners"—an unethical alliance between Stratfor and a number of mainstream journalists—are referred to informally within Stratfor as its "Confed Fuck House." (Another discovery: Coca Cola was spying on PETA. More such gems are sure to surface as operatives sift through the 5.5 million emails.)
A number of the remaining Yes Men-related emails take the form of reports on public appearances by the Yes Men, such as one that describes one audience comprised of "art students on class assignments and free entertainment." Another notes that "The Yes Men tweeted about the US Chamber of Commerce 'plotting forged emails, documents to trick (AND smear) opponents,'" a reference to an apparent plot to discredit Chamber opponents using forged documents, as revealed when thousands of emails were recently leaked by Anonymous from cyber-security firm HB Gary. Yet another discusses Alessio Rastani, the Wall Street trader widely mistaken for Yes Man Andy Bichlbaum, who proclaimed, live on the BBC, that "governments don't rule the world, Goldman Sachs rules the world."
"Rastani was right," said the real Andy Bichlbaum five months later. "But it's now very clear that it doesn't have to be that way anymore."
The Yes Men and representatives from the Bhopal Medical Appeal will join Julian Assange of Wikileaks at a press conference at noon today, Feb. 27, at the Frontline Club in London.

Recibo la invitación (reenviada por una amiga), a este pertinente e importante seminario “De la Plaza Tahrir a la Plaza de" Bolívar: movimientos sociales y comunicación alternativa” elturbion@modep.org, a realizarse en la Universidad Javeriana y… cómo son las cosas, apenas entrando en la onda de lo alternativo…
¡Hoy censuraron mi twitter en las horas de la mañana!
Apenas un tiempo después de entrar en vigencia la potestad que tiene el gobierno de bloquear la información que prefiera en el twitter, http://victorsolano.com/2012/01/26/twitter-anuncia-que-abre-la-puerta-a-la-censura-de-los-gobiernos/ (http://blog.twitter.com/2012/01/tweets-still-must-flow.html) y que la empresa twitter lo haga. Son las pre-vendas de las corporaciones a los gobiernos de los distintos estados, eso depende del cliente.
Desde que cree la cuenta he estado contribuyendo a denunciar las irregularidades existentes en la expedición de la licencia ambiental, el atropello de parte de Emgesa en la construcción de la hidroeléctrica el Quimbo y finalmente la connivencia del gobierno (anterior y actual), con ese estado de cosas. He realizado trinos donde intento informar, contextualizar y contar lo que está sucediendo en la zona y la resistencia pacífica en desobediencia civil que la Asociación de afectadas y afectados por el Quimbo, Asoquimbo, viene desarrollando, lo que me ha impulsado a realizar trinos directos al gobierno actual… Esta mañana no fue sino enviar el mensaje de José Benavides, campesino de la vereda de la Honda, que con sus compañeros hicieran, desde la rivera del río Magdalena; una declaración con motivo de la desmedida agresión realizada por la fuerza pública en la zona del Quimbo la semana pasada. Lo twiteé a todos mis seguidos y algunos seguidores, inclusive dirigirme de forma directa al presidente @JuanManSantos y su ministro del medioambiente @FrankPearl y en menos de 15 minutos suspendieron mi cuenta. Que coincidencia.

No creo haber roto ningún protocolo del
twitter. Siendo que contaba con 31 seguidores y yo “seguía” a 79
personas, mi cuenta apenas si estaba entrando en ritmo. Ahora aparece
mi cuenta en 0. Los más de 600 trinos que realicé (tan pocos
ellos), ahora nadie los podrá ver. Extrañado que aún pueda entrar
a la cuenta y además me permitan ver los trinos de los otros, que
ahora son indeterminados pues no sigo a nadie según lo muestra el
contador.
Porque le estoy cogiendo cariño al tema del trinar es que insisto. Sobre todo porque puedo #tocar al hombro a las personas y decirle algo, recordarle algo, invitarlo a algo, hasta reírnos de algo, reclamarle algo. La forma inmediata en que se mueve la información, el gesto, permite que el mensaje circule cada vez de manera más amplia y le llegue, así no lo toque, a más público.
Ya hice la reclamación al Twitter y llegó la respuesta de forma inmediata. Llegó en inglés (#4700633 Twitter Support: update on "Suspención de cuenta"), pero con los super traductores eso ahora no es problema:

Como
no entendí nada, fui a

allí salió un pantallazo donde me explican, sin explicar, dónde
está el delito “¿Qué son @respuestas y menciones? ¿Qué
es una respuesta?” Y bla bla bla… “La
gente dice muchas cosas en Twitter y habrá ocasiones que te gustaría
responder. De hecho, en un principio la gente tenía tanto interés
en contestar a otros que empezaron a utilizar el @nombre de usuario y
después mensaje para designar el mensaje como respuesta de otro.
Cualquier Tweet que es una respuesta a ti aparecerá en la pestaña
@menciones en su página de inicio…” Y qué con esto, pienso yo.
Luego en el texto explican como enviar respuestas con ejemplos
gráficos, luego dicen “¿Qué es una @mención?” Para terminar
con:
“Para
enviar una mención en Twitter:”.
Digamos
que hasta aquí sigo en las mismas, ¿qué hice para merecer ser
suspendido en el servicio? Un poco más adelante recomienda:
“Ten en cuenta:
- Gente sólo verá las respuestas de los demás en su cronología si están siguiendo tanto el remitente como el destinatario de la actualización.
- Gente verá cualquier mención escrita por alguien que te sigue (todas las menciones son tweets regulares).
- Personas con cuentas protegidas sólo pueden enviar las respuestas a las personas que hayan autorizado a seguirlos.
- Si alguien te envía una respuesta y no están siguiendo el usuario, la respuesta no aparecerá en sus cronología, pero sí aparecerá en la pestaña de menciones.
- Las respuestas siempre tendrá "en respuesta a" que aparecerá junto a la fecha. Si un Tweet no tiene esto, es considerada una mención.

aquí.” Aquí terminó el mensaje donde me invitan a
responder si quedé satisfecho o no.
Por
supuesto que les envié de inmediato un mensaje, en el mismo correo,
pues no veo cual es mi falta. Escribí: “Mi accionar fue poner, de
manera manual, los nombres de las personas a quienes me dirijo y el
texto que quería leyeran. ¿Qué está mal? ¿Por qué esto está
prohibido?” Y me respondieron “¡Gracias por enviar comentarios
sobre este artículo!”. Luego silencio… Y hasta aquí llego la
aventura.
Esta
es una manera muy decente de decir que no gusta que hagas circular
información (es mi percepción), pues en el fondo para esto sirve la
herramienta, para que la información circule. Ahora bien, si no la
puedo enviar de manera masiva en un momento dado y en tiempo real,
¿es ese un abuso?¿cuál es el mensaje que debo recibir de la
compañía que me ofrece el servicio? Abuso de qué. Si alguien no
me quiere y no quiere recibirme, que lo haga saber y ya, diría yo…
No tengo ninguna advertencia o respuesta de las personas que sigo que
me impida enviarles información, así como tampoco su rechazo
expreso. Creo que si alguien me rechazó fueron @JuanManSantos y
@FrankPearl y eso detonó la alarma para que mis correos fueran
realmente no deseados. Entonces hay complicidad de Twitter y esto
queda demostrado.
¿Dónde
queda mi derecho constitucional a la información?2
O como sucede con el Quimbo, el todo poderoso gobierno decide ¿hasta
dónde y cómo se regulan mis libertades, mi territorio, mis
recursos, mis afectos y las relaciones que quiero establecer? Twitter
como empres que trabaja en el territorio colombiano y bajo sus
Normas, ¿qué responsabilidad le toca?
Parece

Excuses aanbieden is niet makkelijk, zeker niet voor het Colombiaanse leger
'Gelieve ons te verontschuldigen' lieten ze de familieleden van Manuel Antonio Tao Pillimue en Hortencia Neyid Tunja Cuchumbe weten.
Die hadden verwacht dat op 17 februari jongstleden het Colombiaanse leger en het Ministerie van Defensie zouden opdagen om hun excuses aan te bieden aan de families.
Maar het bericht dat ze op het laatste moment toegestuurd kregen had het over iets anders: de geplande ceremonie werd afgelast. 'uit veiligheidsoverwegingen' voegden ze er nog aan toe in een fax die naar de advocate werd gestuurd. 'Vreemd,' vonden de familieleden, ' want het is hier altijd zo rustig. Trouwens, is het niet juist het leger dat die veiligheid moet garanderen?'
De rust in het dorpje Belén, gelegen in het zuidwesten van Colombia in het departement Cauca, werd 6 jaar geleden bruusk verstoord, toen Manuel en Hortencia, tesamen met William Cunacue, op de moto terugkeerden van een feestje. Net buiten het dorp werden ze onder vuur genomen door het leger dat daar in een hinderlaag lag. Zowel Hortencia, toen 17 jaar, als Manuel, 21, werden in de rug geschoten en kwamen ter plekke om. William raakte gewond maar wist desondanks te ontkomen, achteraf werd ie alsnog aangehouden en beschuldigd van terrorisme en rebellie.
De lijken van beide dodelijke slachtoffers werden door de soldaten eerst verborgen en daarna aangekleed in camouflage-kledij om het zo te laten lijken alsof ze guerrilla strijders waren. Er werden hen eveneens een revolver en handgranaat in de handen gestoken om de slachtpartij te rechtvaardigen.
Geen van de drie had echter in de verste verte iets te maken met de FARC guerrillabeweging die nu reeds een halve eeuw tegen het Colombiaanse leger strijdt in het land. Dit was dan ook een duidelijk geval van 'Valse Positieven': onschuldige burgers die omgebracht werden en achteraf voorgesteld werden als guerrillero’s om de legerstatistieken op te smukken. Naar schatting zouden er zo ongeveer 3.000 dergelijke gevallen plaatsgevonden hebben onder het bewind van voormalig president Alvaro Uribe tussen 2002 en 2010, vergelijkbaar met het aantal slachtoffers dat viel tijdens de 17-jarige dictatuur van Pinochet in Chile.
Velen daarvan blijven nog steeds door straffeloosheid omringd, ondanks het feit dat het schandaal van de 'Valse Positieven' reeds sinds 2009 publiek aan het licht kwam. In dit geval gingen de familieleden echter op zoek naar gerechtigheid, en konden uiteindelijk bekomen dat een vrouwelijke rechter in Popayán het leger en de
Colombiaanse staat verantwoordelijk stelde voor de misdaad.
Als straf moesten ze publiek hun excuses aanbieden aan de familieleden voor de ongerechtvaardigde dubbele moord, in een ceremonie die door de officiële media in het hele land zou uitgezonden worden.
Die ceremonie was nu juist gepland voor afgelopen vrijdag 17 februari, in het dorpje Belén zelf, maar op het laatste moment werd die nog afgeblazen door de verantwoordelijke van het leger 'om veiligheidsredenen'.
De dorpbewoners besloten echter toch door te gaan met de reeds lang vooraf geplande herdenkingsceremonie. De kleine dorpskerk van Belén zat dan ook goed vol met familieleden, vrienden en buren, velen van hen gekleed in oranje t-shirts met daarop de woorden: 'sin olvido ('niet vergeten').
De misviering was een serene gebeurtenis met zang en teksten die het thema van de straffeloosheid aanbrachten, en met achteraf nog tijd om de gebeurtenissen van die fatale dag terug in herinnering te brengen. Iets wat uiteraard moeilijk was voor vele verwanten, ook nog 6 jaar later.
Om duidelijk te maken dat ze helemaal niet akkoord gingen met de manier waarop de bevoegde autoriteiten met de families van de slachtoffers omsprongen werd achteraf een verklaring opgesteld waarin ze eisen dat de officiële ceremonie ter verontschuldiging alsnog op 10 maart wordt gehouden, en ditmaal zonder 'flauwe excuses' of goedkope uitvluchten.
Het huis waar Hortencia Neyid Tunja werd geboren is ondertussen omgedoopt tot het 'Huis van de Herinnering'. Hier worden foto's en herinneringen aan beide overleden jongeren bewaard, maar het is ook een plaats voor ontmoeting geworden waar de families en de hele buurt samenkomen, en zelfs plaats voorzien is om les te geven.
De voormalige slaapkamer van Hortencia is nu een klaslokaal waar kinderen en leerlingen van de omliggende scholen samenkomen om lessen te volgen. Telkens een groep nieuwe leerlingen langskomt schrijven ze hun namen bij op de muren.
Het huis werd mede met steun van Broederlijk Delen terug opgeknapt zodat het deze belangrijke functie in de gemeenschap kan blijven vervullen.

Casa de la Memoria - het Huis van de Herinnering
Het huis waar Hortencia Neyid Tunja werd geboren is ondertussen omgedoopt tot het 'Huis van de Herinnering'. We Need Copyright Reform, Not #ACTA

As a Member of the European Parliament, I very much welcome the increased attention the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) has received in the past weeks. It has taken a while for massive outcry to emerge, but we are seeing protest voices getting louder and louder.
The internet is a great tool to alert politicians to all the dangers of this treaty, just as the internet was a tool to mobilize people against the SOPA and PIPA bills in the US. For any lobby to be effective, however, it must be fact based. Misinformed criticism helps those supporting ACTA.
The dangers and threats of the ACTA treaty are shared by free-speech advocates and access to medicine groups alike. ACTA is seeking to deal with a number of widely differing issues, and hence does not do a good job at any of them.
Additionally, there are serious concerns about the collateral damage that ACTA would cause.
Regrettably, concerns by businesses, NGO’s and politicians have not led to a better result. This is partly due to the intransparant way in which ACTA has been established and negotiated. As a democratically elected representative, I believe it is not the role of government to protect outdated business models, and I do believe it is our job to ensure democratic oversight.
Besides zooming in on the details of what ACTA will and will not do, taking a step back and looking at the broader picture is also important. As someone who advocates copyright reform, notably the harmonization of copyright laws in Europe, I do not believe stricter enforcement of outdated systems is helpful or relevant. Enforcement is not even possible in many cases, and not without violating people’s fundamental rights.
Yet there is a big push towards enforcing outdated legal structures of copyright by the entertainment industry. ACTA will lock any signatory country into a system of copyright enforcement, leaving the democratic process disadvantaged to enact necessary reform of our laws to suit the digital age.
The fast development of the information society and all the innovations we have seen in the last 15 or so years have changed the way we live. People can enforce their fundamental rights of access to information, and free speech with the help of the internet. Human rights violations are documented and shared across the world, and the way we access and share information and culture such as news, music and films has changed forever. Most copyright rules were developed for the printing press and codified internationally before radio had even been invented.
Some of the most important EU laws regulating the internet were established before social media and peer-to-peer sharing took off. The E-commerce Directive of 2000 and the Copyright Directive of 2001 were enacted without foresight of the new services which were developed over the last 10 years. Time and time again, it has been proven that the Directives and their national implementations do not suit the digital age that followed directly afterwards. The fragmentation of European copyright puts the EU, which is widely known for its wealth in culture, at a competitive disadvantage in comparison to the United States.
Copyright and E-Commerce need to suit the needs of the advanced information society we now live in.
To enable a flourishing Digital Single Market in Europe, we need to analyse case-law of the last 12 years regarding the internet, hear from creators, innovators and consumers. If we want to serve consumers, artists and businesses well, we need to find a new balance in copyright. Every aspect of copyright needs to be discussed: the exclusive rights, limitations and exceptions, collective management, enforcement, etc. Only then should we discuss how to enforce the new found balance on the international arena, such as with ACTA.
ACTA must not be passed. Let’s focus on reform to allow for the opportunities of the internet to bloom, instead of allowing outdated business models to limit the free market, and to criminalize audiences.
Additionally, health threats as a result of counterfeit medicine deserve a better solution than ACTA. Join me in voicing your concern with this treaty, so we can establish flexible copyright rules which are fit for the 21st century.
