Stop the crackdown

To the U.S. and other governments and corporations involved in the crackdown on Wikileaks:

We call on you to stop the crackdown on WikiLeaks and its partners immediately. We urge you to respect democratic principles and laws of freedom of expression and freedom of the press. If Wikileaks and the journalists it works with have violated any laws they should be pursued in the courts with due process. They should not be subjected to an extra-judicial campaign of intimidation.

The vicious intimidation campaign against WikiLeaks is wrong, dangerous and undermines the rule of law. Top US politicians have branded WikiLeaks a terrorist organization, and urged corporations to shut it down. Commentators have suggested assassinating its staff.

The future of our freedoms and the Internet is at stake. Let's urgently take a stand to ensure governments and companies act with restraint and due process, not escalate this fight.

Cabelgate In Latijns Amerika

UPDATE 16/12: er is nog meer info vrijgekomen over Honduras en President Zelaya hier: 'We will need, in my view, to continue to engage Zelaya whenever we can in order to minimize damage and to protect our core interests. ... Using an analogy from American football, we will need to continue to carry out an aggressive bend but not break defensive game plan in the run up to the next elections in November 2009. In this way, I believe we can engage Zelaya intensely in the hope of so as to minimizing damage to Honduran democracy and the economy.'

VS over de staatsgreep in Honduras van 28 Juni 2009:

'there is no doubt that the military, Supreme Court and National Congress conspired on June 28 in what constituted an illegal and unconstitutional coup against the Executive Branch, while accepting that there may be a prima facie case that Zelaya may have committed illegalities and may have even violated the constitution. There is equally no doubt from our perspective that Roberto Micheletti's assumption of power was illegitimate.'

'Essentially:

-- the military had no authority to remove Zelaya from the
country;

-- Congress has no constitutional authority to remove a
Honduran president;

-- Congress and the judiciary removed Zelaya on the basis
of a hasty, ad-hoc, extralegal, secret, 48-hour process;

-- the purported "resignation" letter was a fabrication and
was not even the basis for Congress's action of June 28;
and

-- Zelaya's arrest and forced removal from the country
violated multiple constitutional guarantees, including the
prohibition on expatriation, presumption of innocence and
right to due process.'

Inheemse journalisten uit Latijns amerika weven hechtere banden tijdens succesvol congres

12 November 2010, La Maria, Piéndamo, Colombia. 
Afgelopen week kwamen een duizendtal journalisten van over heel Latijns Amerika een hele week lang samen in Colombia. er waren vertegenwoordigers aanwezig van bijna alle inheemse bevolkingsgroepen die sinds mensenheugenis leven en wonen in heel Latijns Amerika. of beter gezegd: 'Abya Yala', de oorspronkelijke, inheemse naam voor het continent voor Colombus er een voet op neerzette. Sinds die invasie, nu meer dan 500 jaar geleden, is hun levenswijze, cultuur en voorbestaan voortdurend onder bedreiging. Recentelijk worden ze meer en meer geconfronteerd met megaprojecten, zoals petroleumwinning en grootschalige mijnbouw, die andermaal inbreuk doen op hun rechten en territorium.
Het was dan ook geen toeval dat dit congres plaatsvond op het territorium 'La María' in het zuidenwesten van Colombia, dat in 1999 opnieuw werd heroverd door de lokale Misak bevolkingsgroep.




Daarom werd vorig jaar in Puno, Peru besloten om een intercontinentaal congres te houden specifiek voor inheemse, alternatieve journalisten waarin ze samen strategieën zouden uitdenken om beter met elkaar en de buitenwereld te communiceren. Dit met de bedoeling om de zichtbaar van de problemen van de inheemse bevolkingsgroepen verhogen, aangezien deze door de traditionele media in hun thuislanden systematisch worden genegeerd en zelfs gecriminaliseerd. In vele laden, waaronder ook Colombia, wordt het protest van de inheemse bevolking gelijkgesteld terrorisme.
Een belangrijk discussiepunt tijdens het congres, was hoe de cosmovisie van de inheemse bevolking te integreren valt met de nieuwe technologieën die dezer dagen te beschikking zijn, en of dit tot contradicties leidt. Er werd bijvoorbeeld veel aandacht besteed aan het traditionele reinigingsritueel rondom 'grootvader vuur' dat in de ochtend word gehouden om het werk van die dag goed aan te vatten.

Hoewel er gedurende de hele week ijverig werd doorgewerkt in de verschillende thematische groepen, was er 's avond ook tijd voor ontspanning: presentatie van dansgroepen en muziek, of 'culturele integratie' waaronder verstaan word 'eenheid in diversiteit'.
